Duty well-performed, Honor untarnished, Country above self, words of immense value that have enriched the Vanguard spirit across generations. It is the culture that has shaped and molded the attributes of a gentleman of the finest order, and the hallmark of accomplishment, satisfaction, and achievement. The Christmas Season is the most propitious time to reflect on this value. The best of everything emerges during this period. It is garnished with many celebrations, festivities, and merriment. The luster are just the peripheral symbols because beyond this glitter lies hope, happiness, and prosperity; the true meaning of the birth of Jesus Christ. Similarly, our organization rests upon a foundation of leadership, excellence, and service, hallowed words that shall forever be the bedrock of hope and vision of this venerable institution.

The Year 2012 is a milestone in the Vanguard calendar. It is our centennial year, 100 years of quality military and ROTC training that started in U.P. in 1912. Within that span, the ROTC program has brought forth dedicated Vanguards and leaders in all aspects of national life, military, business and industry, government, academe, and many other fields of endeavor. We are the heir to a purposeful legacy that proudly beacons as a light of the past and future generations to come. As we end the year 2011 and enter the year 2012, let us renew our pledge and commitment to our noble ideals and remain to be true and worthy Vanguards. LONG LIVE VANGUARD!!!

Lastly, I wish to take this opportunity to personally invite you to attend our Reunion and Homecoming on 17 March 2012. Let us all stand tall and be counted as we make our Centennial Roll Call.

Around 120 golfers, mostly top-notch executives from various social and industry sectors, trekked to the Forest Hills Golf & Country Club in Antipolo City to be rewarded with a delightful and pleasant competitive golfing experience.

To complete its success, the tournament was able to achieve its most important goal of bestowing a fitting tribute to General Carlos P. Romulo, in keeping with the UP Vanguard’s new Hall of Fame Memorial Cup tradition. Mr. Miguel Antonio “Mike” Romulo, grandson of the honoree, represented the Romulo family in the event; while participants enjoyed a special video tribute to Gen Romulo entitled “A Warrior for Peace” during the awarding ceremonies.

The UP Barkada added color to the tournament by adopting it as their monthly tournament.

Winners were elated to receive Rayadillo Cadet Trophies specially designed for the Memorial Cup.

Many of the players also won valuable raffle prizes such as cellphones, netbook laptops, LCD TV, and many more. To top it all, the tournament officials were able to efficiently tabulate the final scores and announce in no time.

The tournament was co-presented by Allied Bank, San Miguel Corp, Federal Phoenix Insurance Corp and the Silver Jubilarian Class of Sulô and Marasìg 1987. Major sponsors were Amb Roberto Romulo, Abejo Builders Corp, Kia Motors, Megaworld Corp, New Coast Boracay, Forest Hills and Sun Life Financials. Minor sponsors were Citisec Online, Citra Metro Manila Tollways Corp, Tanay Rural Bank, Merrell, Air21, Globe Telecom, Smart, Philippine Stock Exchange, Doña Jovita Garden Resort, Banco de Oro, IP Converge Data Center, Inc., Blue Magnet Marketing Solutions, PLDT, Casino Filipino and Ericsson. Donors were Unilab, Ms. Jee Cabochan, Maynilad Water Services, Inc., Kuysen Enterprise and SM Supermalls.

“The Gen. Carlos P. Romulo Memorial Cup” is an integral part of the 90th UP Vanguard Annual Convention and UP ROTC Centennial Homecoming festivities.

With the aim of enticing more attendance from brods especially the younger ones, twists were made with the event. A photo booth was set up to attract people to have free photos with printed copies for free! A boodle fight was prepared instead of the usual buffet dinner to make dining more enjoyable among brods and make it reminiscent of their Corps days. A classic videoke machine was rented for those who wanted to sing their hearts out and have fun. There was also a raffle draw of special prizes for all brods who registered and stayed on in the event. Free flowing drinks of beer, cocktail drinks, wine and juices with lots of “pica-pica” snacks were likewise served to aid brods in socializing with one another.

The highlight of the event was the recognition of the birthday celebrants and the Eulogy Poem for the Vanguard Dead. Birthday celebrants Mandy Guidote ’58, Ben De Leon ’57, Ernie Reyes ’80, K Tirado ’99, Ariel Baluso ’05 and Adrian Atas ’11 were each given mini birthday cakes and Vanguard pins as tokens and a toast by National Commander Jaime De Los Santos. Cadets also prepared a silent drill presentation in their honor. In turn, the celebrants offered a wreath and remembered the Vanguard dead after Brod Floro Francisco ’80 delivered his eulogy Poem.

The U.P. Vanguard, Inc. (UPVI) top brass led by its National Commander Jimmy De Los Santos, National Chairman, G’Bee Reyes, together with two distinguished senior members MGen. Joe Magno and Former Sec. Hermie Dumlao and some Governors, trooped to the Philam Life Tower to pay a courtesy visit to Amb. Roberto Romulo last 03 August 2011.

The main purpose of the visit was to formally notify the Romulo family and invite them to the UPVI Hall of Fame golf tournament organized by the UPVI in honor of the late Gen. Carlos P. Romulo. Fittingly entitled “The Gen. Carlos P. Romulo Memorial Cup”, the event is scheduled on 15 August 2011 at the Forest Hills Golf & Country Club. The tournament is also the first of a series of events included in the UPROTC Centennial Year themed “100 Years of UPROTC: Duty Well Performed; Honor Untarnished; and Country Above Self”.

Amb. Romulo graciously received the U.P. Vanguard contingent which apprised him about their various initiatives promoting youth leadership in U.P. Convinced that the tournament and the programs will perpetuate his father’s legacy of honor, excellence and leadership, the Ambassador personally donated cash and issued an appeal to top Filipino corporations to support the “The Gen. Carlos P. Romulo Memorial Cup”.
